The Pineapple is nicknamed the King of Fruits and was once highly regarded as a status symbol for European royals, nobles and the upper class. Such was also the case when the pineapple was introduced to Southeast Asia and the ancient Kingdom of Lanxang Hom Khao (Literally: The Land of a Million Elephants and the White Parasol) - modern day Laos.
Traditionally, this special sauce was reserved for use during special celebratory meals consisting of meat and seafood. If you love anything tropical, you will love our famous pineapple sauce. Jeow Bong (Traditional Laotian Sundried Sweet & Spicy Chili Paste).
Jeow Bong is a very special dipping sauce for the people of Laos. It originates from the ancient royal capital city and the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang in Northern Laos. Traditionally, the sauce is made with sundried chilies, then roasted over an open fire and crushed into a paste. It is then mixed with other local ingredients to create the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. The process is long, but it is a labour of love. Royalty and commoners alike enjoy this dipping sauce.
This sauce is present at every meal in a Laotian home and is usually eaten with sticky rice, but it can be spread on your sandwiches, added to your stir fry, soup and even spaghetti sauce for more depth and flavor!
